What comes to mind when you think of river cruising? Is it something associated with the older generation or perhaps for those who prefer a less active lifestyle?

Let me correct the myths of river cruising for you. While I have only experienced one river cruise on AmaWaterways, as an experienced luxury travel advisor, I can help you decide if this is the right fit for you.

Myth #1: River cruising is for older travelers

There are so many active things to do on board. They have bike tours (and I don’t mean e-bikes), hiking tours, a wellness program with classes offered and so much more. I have not wanted for anything to do while on board sailing. They even offer a varied range of activities for those who are at different levels of fitness.

It's truly a fantastic opportunity for multi-generational travel. I observed numerous families, ranging in age from their 30s to 70s, enjoying their time together. In the lounge late at night, there was always dancing! After participating in excursions tailored to their interests and activity levels, families would come together for cocktail hour and dinner. It's an ideal way to enjoy a vacation.

Myth #2: I will be bored

As I mentioned, I've had plenty of activities to keep me busy. From savoring a relaxing hour in the lounge with a superb cocktail to engaging in fitness activities and exploring numerous ports of call, I've experienced a wide array of activities. Each one has provided opportunities for relaxation and meeting new people.

Myth #3: The ships are too small to feel luxurious

This part has truly impressed me! To me, luxury encompasses three main aspects: meticulous attention to detail, personalized service, and outstanding cuisine. The attention to detail is truly exceptional. Due to the ship's smaller size, the staff quickly become familiar with you, even addressing you by name. They recall your preferences from the previous day and ensure you receive them again. With one staff member for every two guests, it's easy to feel exceptionally special throughout your voyage.

Let's discuss the food. This is not at all like a massive cruise ship. (And to be clear, those large ships can provide some fantastic dining experiences for an additional fee.) On river cruise ships, every meal is a specialty dining experience. Plus, on AMA (other river cruise lines do the same) the chef's tasting table is included in your cruise package.

This is just a sampling of pictures. One of my companions took over the task of taking food pictures because every dish was presented so well. The taste was always perfection.

Myth #4: There’s no flexibility

I am the first to admit that I enjoy wandering and exploring on my own. However, the advantage of a small ship is that it provides convenient transportation to town, allowing you to explore independently once you arrive. Alternatively, you can plan an activity tailored to your interests. We've appreciated some of the walking tours, but we've also ventured out on our own to explore and have fun.

And another positive of river cruising is that at some ports of call, you are docked within walking distance of the ship.

Honestly, my initial impression is a 9 out of 10. I believe I'll always prefer traveling by land. I love the exploration and immersion that comes from staying in a city center, with its local restaurants, quaint cobblestone streets, and alleyways. However, occasionally visiting places that you wouldn't experience outside a port of call offers a refreshing change of pace. It's also wonderful to have your suitcase unpacked and friends ready to welcome you back "home."

I already have plans for my next adventure…that announcement will decided early 2026.
